The Swap story

About us

Helping Canadian students and 18-30s to live and work abroad since 1975.

Hello! And welcome to SWAP. Here's a bit about us...

Our story

In 1975, our forward-thinking founders sent a small group of intrepid Canadians off to live and work in New Zealand. They understood that the key to seeing more of the world – was to earn while they did it. SWAP was born, and with it, a belief that working abroad is one of the most transformational (and fun) things you can do in your twenties or thirties.

50+ years and 76,000+ Swappers later – we're one of Canada's leading work and intern abroad organizations. Proudly Canadian with HQs in Toronto and Vancouver, today we offer 11 programs in 8 countries.

Our difference

We're a close-knit crew of travel geeks and visa nerds. Travellers ourselves, we're passionate about spreading our adventures to as many Canadians as we can. Whether it's meticulously guiding you through your visa paperwork, a pre-interview pep talk for your next backpacker job, or figuring out your overseas bank account set-up – we treat every booking as if it were our own. Helping you to navigate everything you need to live your best (work) life abroad.

Our impact

We believe that travel changes everything, but we get that the cost can be a dealbreaker. That’s why we created the Youth Access Scholarship Fund – where we donate 5% of profits to help support young Canadians to have the life-shaping experience of working or interning overseas. It’s our way of backing 18-30s from lower-income and under-represented groups to make big moves abroad.

Applications for 2026 scholarship funding are now closed. Applications for 2027 scholarship funding will typically open in Oct '26. To find out more, visit our parent JENZA site.

Our stakeholders

As a youth travel organisation with 50+ years of experience, we understand the power of youth travellers and their positive impact on shaping our world: helping to promote tolerance, challenge perspectives and build intercultural understanding. To help keep youth voices at the heart of what we do, we have a Youth Advisory Panel (YAP) of global 18-35 years olds who consult with us as a business – helping to influence everything from marketing campaigns to product development.

To find out more and apply for our panel, visit our parent JENZA site.

Our family

While SWAP is proudly Canadian born and raised, we’re part of a wider group of like-minded youth travel brands under the JENZA Travel Group banner. United in our mission to open up a world of cultural exchange opportunities for students and 18-30s globally, our sibling brands include: Summer Camp USA experts BUNAC, global work and intern experts JENZA, Irish work abroad legends USIT, and leading US visa sponsor IENA.

We have global HQs in the UK, Ireland, Australia and the USA – offering arrival support, 24/7 emergency help, and peace of mind for our Swappers abroad.

OUR HISTORY

1975 The Student Work Abroad Program (SWAP) is founded. We sent seven Canadian students to New Zealand, provided visa support, and helped them get settled in their new country.

2000 SWAP is Canada’s largest exchange organization, helping thousands every year to live and work abroad in New Zealand, Australia, UK, Ireland, the USA and more.

2005 Most countries expand their eligibility criteria to include youth aged 18-35, so we change our name to SWAP Working Holidays. Now we get to say "yes" to all Canadian youth travellers. If you’re 35 or under, the world is waiting!

2020 Uh oh – we all know this one! We might have spent a year at home, but we knew we’d be back! The spirit of travel cannot be extinguished and we were ready to wait it out.

2022 All SWAP programs resume and Canadians are back to living, working and experiencing the world through our work and travel programs.

2025 We extended our travel family! SWAP became part of the JENZA Travel Group, helping us to spread our work and travel adventures to even more 18-30s around the world.
