Experience Thailand the way no tourist ever could. As part of SWAP's Teach in Thailand program, you'll be as a respected (and paid) English teacher within the Thai school system - helping to improve the language skills of local students while promoting cultural exchange within your new school and its community. A fascinating mix of traditional and modern, Thailand is filled with rich culture, magnificent landscapes, and warm, hospitable people. After all, it is called "Amazing Thailand" for a reason.
The Teach in Thailand program will make sure your transition to teaching is as easy as possible. You'll get your teaching placement before you leave Canada, and you'll know where you're going, along with the grade level and size of class you'll teach. Once you arrive, you'll get an airport transfer to your all-inclusive 6-day orientation in Chiang Mai or Bangkok that will go over teaching skills and where you'll meet other new incoming teachers on the program. You can also participate in fun cultural activities before arriving at your new school to meet the children you'll be teaching!
English is the principal foreign language being taught in Thailand. It opens up a lot of doors to students who want to pursue work internationally, especially in the corporate world, so they are in need of knowledgeable English teachers! While not all schools are created equally and some may have a higher learning curve than others, SWAP will oversee your stay and ensure the staff and teachers at your school support you and help prepare appropriate curriculums and lessons for the students.
You will be teaching about 18-22 hours per week, but should be designated as a 40 hour work week for lesson planning, grading, and extra-curricular activities. Classes run Monday-to-Friday, with some activities being held after school or on weekends occasionally. Depending on the type of school you're placed in, class sizes range from 25-40 students on average. Teaching placements are available at the kindergarten, primary, and secondary levels.
The monthly salary rates have been raised for 2019! The base rate is now 28,000 THB, up from 25,000 THB. Rates are also based on your teaching level and experience. The cost of living is very good in Thailand so this is enough to eat delicious pad thai and travel to Ko Samui or Wat Rong Khun each weekend!
Bachelor's degree holders (any subject): 28,000 THB per month (approximately $1,150 CAD)
TEFL/TESOL/CELTA* certificate holders (min 120 hours): 30,000 THB (approx. $1,250 CAD)
Ability to teach non-English subjects (Maths, Sciences): 30,000 THB (approx. $,250 CAD)
Education Degree holders: 33,000 THB (approx. $1370 CAD)
*must provide certificate and information about issuing institution – we reserve the right to determine if the certificate will meet program standards.
End of Contract Bonus: If you commit to a two semester contract, you will receive a competition bonus of 20,000 THB ($800 CAD). This bonus will be subject to a performance review by their school. This bonus is only available to applicants who commit to a two semester contract before receiving a placement.
Single room housing is provided by your host educational institution for the full duration of your stay (and is included in the program cost). Most teachers will be housed in single apartments or share accommodation with one or two other teachers. In this situation, you would have your own private bedroom. The majority of housing is located on school grounds, but some locations will be just a close 5-10 minute walk from campus, depending on the school. While your rent is included in the program, utilities are paid separately. Rates vary depending on your location but these are usually very affordable.
You will receive a 6-day orientation prior to placement that includes information on living and teaching in Thailand, social and cultural activities (such as an elephant trek), airport pickup to the orientation centre, accommodation and all meals, support and emergency services.
Due to legal regulations, participants will need to cover upfront expenses for their work permit, but you will be reimbursed these costs at the end of your teaching contract. Please budget for the work permit (1,600 THB), visa extension (1900 THB) and a Thai medical exam (800 THB). Depending on the province where your placement is located, an education affidavit ($50 USD), Thai criminal check (100 THB) and document stamp (260 THB) may be required.

"Six weeks. It's amazing to think how so much can change in so little time. Time and change are not linear. A dream, a wish, can all manifest in an instance of time and likewise can all create a lifetime of change. Just one short moment can drastically alter the course of your life. Now imagine how many moments are possible in six weeks. Six weeks and I am on the other side of the world in 40-degree heat, trying to speak a foreign language with a completely different alphabet, working an entirely new career, and bonding with people from all over the world. The memories I have of dancing the night away on the streets of Bangkok, laughing with the students as I attempt to speak Thai, fearing for my life riding on a motorbike, basking in the glow of feeling full after a delicious Thai meal fresh off the streets, are some that will last me a lifetime."
"I've learned is that it is more fulfilling to stay in a single foreign place for a very long time rather than hopping from one touristic attraction to another. By having lived in the same neighbourhood, I was able to get to know it much more deeply than any other place I visited throughout my trip. I interacted with the same people, learned about their lifestyles, formed friendships with them and eventually felt as though I almost belonged there."
"SWAP's abroad partner was fabulous! I could write an entire book about how wonderful and helpful these people were. They did everything within their power to make the transition from moving to a new place easier."
