Ease your way into your new Kiwi surroundings and spend your first week taking in all New Zealand has to offer. Meet tons of like-minded travellers on the same journey as you and start making memories as soon as your jet lag wears off!
After dropping off your bags and settling in to the hostel, your best first week begins. After your comprehensive orientation for all things Auckland, you’ll head off and soon be exploring lush rainforests, sparkling blue ocean surf, and endless stretches of sand on 90 Mile beach. With authentic Maori cultural experiences, adrenaline pumping activities, and Insta-worthy landscapes, this tour should not be missed. After, our friendly staff and welcoming hosting centre will be waiting to help make finding work a breeze, and will be there to support you during your stay in New Zealand. Say Kia Ora to your new home!
Day 1 — Arrival in New Zealand: Kia Ora and welcome to New Zealand! Don't stress or worry about your arrival to Auckland; we've got you covered. You will be picked up at the airport and shuttled into the heart of the city where your adventure begins. Here you will be welcomed by our team and checked into your room. You will have time to freshen up, take a nap or go for a wander. In the afternoon, our local guide will meet you and the rest of your group at the hostel and brief you on what is to come during the week — sun, sand, sailing, snorkelling, kayaking, and so much more! Then we will head out on the town for our welcome dinner, followed by drinks at our favourite bar where you will get to know the people in your group.
Day 2 — Orientation and Auckland City Tour: Start the day off with breakfast and then pop over to your new local hub (our hosting centre in Auckland) for our work and travel orientation session, where we will give you a comprehensive presentation all about finding work and travelling in New Zealand, as well as organise your bank account and IRD (tax) number. In the afternoon, we head out to explore Auckland City by foot! Your guide has the inside scoop on all the best local spots for amazing food, coffee, and where to go out at night.
Day 3 — Maori Culture and Auckland Party Night: Today you will be experiencing the world famous Haka, a spine-tingling Maori cultural performance which will provide an insight into the history of Aotearoa New Zealand. After the show, you will be free to meet and take photos with members of the Kapa Haka group.
Afterwards, it’s time to hit the town! This evening we will visit some of Auckland's best spots while on the popular Frenzi Bar Crawl, where you'll get free entry and 4 drinks along the way!
Day 4 — From Auckland to the Bay of Islands: Today we head north to the Bay of Islands, a subtropical micro-region surrounded by turquoise waters known for its stunning beauty and over 144 islands! We will base ourselves in the popular township of Paihia and explore this amazing region. This laid back town is famous for sailing, fishing, nature walks, and swimming with dolphins — or you can just relax on one of its many amazing pristine beaches.
We’ll check in at the amazing Pipi Patch Backpackers — known for its friendly staff, lively environment, and great location to both the beach and town. In the afternoon, you can chill out on the sundeck or pool/spa at the Pipi Patch or take a stroll into the centre of town to check out all the sights. That evening we will have a group dinner and go over the itinerary for the next day's exciting trip to Cape Reinga and 90 Mile Beach!
Day 5 — Cape Reinga and 90 Mile Beach: Today is going to be filled with adventure and photo opportunities! You will be heading north to the very tip of Aotearoa — Cape Reinga — where the Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea meet. You will see the famous Cape Reinga Lighthouse and soak up the amazing coastlines. Depending on the tides, we'll be cruising down the famous 90 Mile Beach! In true Kiwi style, no day is complete without an adrenaline-filled activity. You will get an opportunity to surf the giant sand dunes at Te Paki Stream. We will end the day with a walk through a pre-historic kauri forest, where you can hug 2,000 year-old trees that are home to the incredible native birdlife of New Zealand.
Day 6 — Overnight Cruise: This once-in-a-lifetime adventure continues with an overnight cruise in the Bay of Islands. The adventure cruise offers a very unique experience where you can go snorkelling, target shooting, kayaking, do island walks and even the opportunity to catch seafood. In the evening, you can enjoy the 3-hour cruise through the islands and enjoy a Kiwi BBQ with your group. As darkness falls, you can chill out for an amazing star-gazing session where we will point out constellations, planets, and galaxies. For the more adventurous, have a night sea swim and then warm yourself by the fire.
Day 7 onwards — New Zealand Awaits: On our last day together, we suggest wake up early and take in an amazing sunrise at sea and think about the next step in your NZ adventure! A Kiwi breakfast is served up and then we head back to Auckland. Once back in the city, you will have the support and guidance from our expert NZ team to help you plan the next step. Whether you want to start your job search or explore more of New Zealand, the team will be here to help!
It turns out the fantasy world of hobbits, dragons, dwarves, and wizards exists in a very real place! You may recognize New Zealand's spectacular landscapes from a starring role in a famous trilogy. If you were blown away by those stunning mountains, enchanted forests, turquoise lakes, rolling hills, and tranquil rivers on screen, this is your chance to experience the magic in person, bro! With a population of 4.5 million people (and over 30 million sheep), in a landmass equivalent to that of the UK, most of the time you can see the beauty of New Zealand without the hordes of tourists. But New Zealand is not just geared for outdoorsy types - lively (and sheep-free) cities like Auckland, New Zealand's capital, have enough pubs, museums, and shops to keep you entertained!
SWAP's hosting centre is located in the heart of Auckland and is the perfect first stop for sorting out your phone, banking, job, room, and travel plans. The friendly and knowledgeable Kiwi staff there have been hosting Canadian Swappers since 1975 and will help you with everything you need to get sorted! From there, the choice is yours. You can live and work in Auckland, the "City of Sails," or you can move on to any other sweet as place in New Zealand, as the work visa you secured easily through SWAP's guidance is valid everywhere for one year! Having English as the spoken language makes it easy for Canadians to find a job and start a new life there. Job opportunities abound in tourism and hospitality, but there's also farm work, au pairing, adventure guiding, and career-related work, all of which pay higher than they do in Canada!

"SWAP has made this experience as easy as it probably could have been for me. As a brand-new traveler little things like setting up a bank account and getting a tax number could have been extremely stressful, but SWAP helped me through it before I even arrived in the country. This really makes it easier and more exciting for someone who has no idea what they are getting themselves into. SWAP has really shaped my trip from the start without even realizing it. On my first day in New Zealand I met one of my best friends in an orientation. So many of memories and favorite moments of this trip would never had happened if I didn't meet her my first day and I'm super grateful I did."
"The first job that I had was as a groom and barn manager of a sport horse barn in Karaka. It didn't take long at all to find this job! Within 2 days of actively looking for a job I had an interview and was hired on the spot! The next job that I had was as a tour guide and part of the greens team at the Hobbiton Movie Set. This was an ultimate nerd dream come true! I've been a huge Lord of the Rings/Hobbit fan since I was a young child."
"Making friends, finding new passions, waking up to the sun-rise on the side of a hill on Waiheke. Staying the night on Tiri-Tiri and seeing 5 wild kiwi (among many other native species) and flying to Waiheke in a helicopter for lunch. Super helpful to have a "home-base" downtown [hosting centre]. I still use it as a place to hang-out when I need wifi or to charge my phone when I'm in town. Was really helpful in finding a job and writing my resume. Met some awesome travelers. Staff is incredible and always has a handy recommendation for when I'm bored and looking for something to do."
"My trip to New Zealand has truly been a dream from beginning to end. From waking up in my yurt overlooking the ocean every day to hiking around Stewart Island (one word - penguins!), this country has shown me that life should be experienced with bare feet, music, and a sense of wonder! One of my top experiences was a nonstop adrenaline rush in Queenstown. If you travel to New Zealand, you'll probably never want to leave!"
